Maintenance

Like any investment, a beautifully polished floor needs ongoing maintenance and care to preserve its value and the enhancement it brings to your home. Regular maintenance of your timber floor will extend the life of your timber and keep your floor consistently looking its best.

Just how regularly you need to maintain/clean the floor is totally dependent on the environment the floor is in. Factors such as the level of traffic, the degree of grit carried onto the floor, pets and children, the condition of the immediate outside area etc. all have significant influence on the wear of the floor.

Shoes carry sand, grit and small stones which will scratch the floor surface in the same way that sandpaper does. Use of external mats at all entries will reduce the amount of dirt and grit which enters your house. We advise these mate are cleaned regularly.

Grit and dirt do not just hide the sheen of your lovingly polished floorboards, the abrasive properties actually harm the timber by scratching and wearing out the surface. We recommend to place a Mat at the front and back door to wipe feet before entering the house to help prevent grit, sand and dirt particles from tracking through your rooms and hurting your timber flooring. The mats should be cleaned regularly.

The most important thing to remember when looking after your timber floor is that you always have to minimise the amount of dust and dirt on your floor. Loose grit can damage a timber floor very quickly when trodden into the surface. The best way to do this is by using an Electrostatic Dust Mop. This process should be done on a regular basis.

When vacuuming your floor it is very important that you use the correct utensil. A lot of people recommend the vacuum heads with wheels or brushes hard up against the floor. Over time the wheels may sieze up or the brushes may go hard which will eventually mark the floor. This is why we recommend you use the Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaning Vacuum Head. Use this attachment to vacuum your hard floor with a "Never Scratch" Guarantee. Electrostatic fringes attract dust so you pick it all up including that last thin film of dust. Fringes easily remove for washing.

Damp mopping will insure that the floor always looks its best. Avoid harsh detergents and abrasive cleaners. The product that we recommend is called Peerless Versadet. It is important when mopping the floor not to leave too much excess water on the floor. The best way to do this is to invest in an Oats Bucket that allows you to ring your mop out. We also recommend you use warm water.

Fit protective Felt Pads to the legs of all chairs and tables, so that they can be moved easily without the risk of scuffing the floor.

High heel shoes, especially worn ones, will dent any hard floor surface, even concrete. Perhaps you could encourage visitors to take off high heels on arrival.

With furniture legs, it is not so much weight but movement that damages floorboards. Fit protective pads to the legs of tables and chairs so that they can be moved easily without the risk of scuffing the floor.

Like any timber product in your home, direct sunlight will cause discoloring over time. (Unless you have chosen a non yellowing product, refer to Product Page). To minimise fading and discoloring, filter direct sunlight with curtains and blinds

SEALING: FOR OILED FLOORS ONLY

Sealing your timber floor only applies for Oil Finishes. Application of Peerless Gemini Sealer is the most important step of sanding and polishing a floor which is finished in Tung Oil. The Gemini acts as a sacrificial coating on top of your timber floor, it provides a durable protective coating, which seals, protects and enhances the appearance of your floor. The Sealer should be applied 72 hours after the final coat of oil is applied.

It is recommended by Peerless Jal that the Gemini Sealer should be re applied every 6-12 months in high traffic areas.

For further information on maintaining oiled floors, please refer to the Exclusive Floor Polishing page

Some of our clients choose to apply the Gemini Sealer them selves. In the circumstance we provide a Peerless Maintenance kit as seen below. It contains:

  • 1 x 5ltr Gemini Sealer Finish (gloss or satin)
  • 1 x 5ltr Versadet concentrated cleaner
  • 1 Premium Grade Mop Head No.20 (for Gemini application).
